A little while ago, we had some people over for dinner. I set the table a tiny bit nicer than usual. When we all sat down to dinner, Claire picked one of the paper napkins up by the corner, held it up in the air in front of everyone at the table and loudly asked, "What is this????"
The cat's out of the bag. I usually forget to put napkins on the table. I'm not sure what my problem is. Growing up, my mom put cloth napkins on the table with every meal. Perhaps I'm just adverse to killing trees and/or doing extra laundry? What about you? Do you have beautiful linens laid out for your bowl of cereal? Or do you keep a nice stack of those tissue-thin paper numbers on the table? Or are you like me and have caught your children wiping their hands on the chair upholstery?
This is why we are friends. Not only do we never have napkins... But I don't use placemats or a tablecloth either. Maybe if we had a table that was nice, or at least that wasn't stained green from a food dying calamity. My mom alway just kept a dishcloth over her shoulder for community use :)
ReplyDeleteyour mom put out cloth napkins for every meal??
ReplyDeleteI thought this was hilarious. We usually have napkins, but when we don't, that's when my kids start complaining. It is interesting how they complain about things that they aren't use to.

ReplyDeleteWe always had paper napkins growing up, so that's what I use in my house now except for special occasions. We just have a little napkin holder out on the table.
ReplyDeleteMy mom has recently switched to cloth all the time to be more eco-friendly. I don't know how it balances out as far as the resources you have to use to launder the cloth v. the waste from paper, though.
